Bembridge based photographer and film maker Ben Wood is coming to the BSC to show his final Mariquita film shot on the Isle of Wight in the summer of 2015.
Mariquita is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and iconic yachts in the history of the sport. Having won the 2014 Panerai Trophy in the Mediterranean, Mariquita returns to Cowes to participate in one of the busiest summers ever on the Solent including the Bicentennial celebrations for the Royal Yacht Squadron. Can Mariquita continue her winning streak with a brand new crew in the challenging Solent conditions? How will Mariquita reconcile her will to win with some of the windiest conditions for 25 years? Against the backdrop of Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup campaign this documentary film follows Mariquita over a four month period as she competes in an array of regattas including the RYS Fleet Review the Westward Cup and Panerai British Classic Week.
In depth interviews with helmsman John Caulcutt and top yachtsmen George Newman and Shirley Robertson give a fascinating insight into the 2015 race campaign as Mariquita takes on rivals Eleonora and Sumurun on the same waters where she started her career in 1911. After an illustrious career spanning over a century there is no doubt the 2015 season will go down as one of Mariquita’s most exciting and eventful.
