Some keen keelboat racing during the week, however the predominantly easterly winds brought rougher conditions than the week before. Indeed on Tuesday, although four Redwings had a nice race, the One-Design race was cancelled as it was decided it was too rough for them to safely transfer to their boats on the Under Tyne moorings.
On Wednesday, we had the annual team racing match against SVYC with two races in One-Designs in the morning and two in the afternoon in Mermaids. Although there was not a lot of actual team racing by the BSC team, the morning races ended in a two all draw; after lunch at Bembridge everyone moved over to Seaview where sadly for the BSC team, the SVYC team racing experience proved to be too strong and we lost all four races which meant that SVYC retained the trophy for yet another year.
Well done to D Orange who won the One-Design Ladies race on Thursday morning in the dieing breeze; Antonia Row sailed very well to come in second and Sophie Ross, sailing single handed, was third. In the afternoon, both fleets had a really nice race and although he did not finish in the top three, it was fun to see Jos Coad, the One-Design Captain, helming a Redwing (Red Gauntlet II) for the first time!
Very disappointingly the strong winds on both Friday & Saturday put paid to any keelboat racing for the annual Regatta trophies. Although in the past racing has had to be abandoned or cancelled on one day occasionally, history does not reveal when both days last had to be cancelled. With Friday’s forecast suggesting that the wind was going to increase as the day wore on, the Inshore/Dinghy Regatta, which started at 11:30 did at least manage to give everyone a relatively short race – the results were as follows:
Scows – 1st Greame Bowen; 2nd Olav Cole; 3rd Ally Tidbury
Optimists – 1st Arthur Finley; 2nd Nathan Bottomley; 3rd Senen Bottomley
Slow Handicap – no starters
Laser 4.7 – 1st Felix McFeely; 2nd Jos Laughton-Scott; 3rd Morgan McLucas
Swan – 1st Clive Spash
Fast Handicap – 1st Giles Easter (Europe); 2nd Nick Haynes (Laser full rig); 3rd George Downer (Laser full rig)
Although a few Redwings & One-Designs set off from Under Tyne to race, the breeze had picked up to over 25 knots by 14:30 and so racing was abandoned.
There was no keelboat or dinghy racing on Saturday, the second day of our annual Regatta.
